Surgery

Kids are resilient. Brave. And most definitely positively blessed and loved by Heavenly Father. We checked in at 5:45 am got him into his tiny hospital gown aka "doggy jams" and waited with a very anxious little boy. Finally at 7:15 am we talked with Dr. Bawduniak and the nurses who were great- Atticus was crying and asking to "go that way" pointing to the exit, but after a few minutes and one nurse playing peek-a-boo, he was showing them his "bug-bites." A little later I was rocking Atticus who was almost alseep, when the nurse stopped by again and asked what he was humming (side note.. when Atticus is tired he hums/mmm's!). I told her nothing particular- it's just a comfort for him. Her response... " I'll be sure to hum when we get to the O.R.!" I I love that woman. When they took him for surgery, I'm pretty sure the entire hospital heard him crying. Eric was strong. I cried. The only thing that kept me kind of together was thinking it could be worse (a darling little girl in our Waco ward was having major surgery that very same day). By 8:40am it was over. The surgery went great. Dr. Bawduniak said he had "beautiful anatomy. Everything was exactly where it should be." There was no hernia on the left side but a "pretty big one" on the right. He woke up quicker than they anticipated and MAD asking for his mommy (I LOVE it). Once back in our room, he slept in my arms until the nurses made me wake him at 1 pm so that he could try to drink fluids to go potty. He was so good through it all. His biggest upset was that his fingers were "stuck." They had put his IV in his left thumb. He sucks his left thumb. We went home with a prescription of Tylenol with Codeine and a sleepy little guy. Eric and I were prepared for a few days of fussiness, sleepiness, lots of cuddles, and Disney movies. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. By 4pm, day of surgery, that boy was ready to go. We practically had to sit on him to keep him from jumping all over the place. The next morning we were expecting fussiness, and once again picked our jaws off of the ground. You would never guess he just had surgery.. Kids are resilient. This is a little "clip" of him the morning after: Of the entire processTHIS was our biggest challenge: A big THANK YOU to our friends and family for the packages, phone calls, and meals. We love you guys. And couldn't be happier with Atticus' surgery and quick recovery... fingers crossed that this next year will bring an easier road for our wild man.
